How Royal Arcade created one of Melbourne’s most photographed Christmas destinations

Few retail destinations carry the architectural significance and enduring appeal of Royal Arcade.

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the historic arcade has welcomed visitors for more than 150 years and remains one of Australia’s most recognisable retail environments. Its ornate Victorian architecture, glass canopy ceilings and intricate detailing have long made it a destination in its own right.

When planning Christmas within a setting of this nature, the challenge was fundamentally different from many retail environments.

The objective was not simply to install decorations: it was to create a festive experience that complemented the architecture, enhanced the visitor journey and contributed to the atmosphere of the precinct without overwhelming the qualities that made the destination special.

Working alongside the Royal Arcade team, Christmas Display Solutions was engaged to develop, deliver and manage a complete Christmas program spanning design, fabrication, installation, dismantle and storage.

Understanding the environment

Royal Arcade occupies a unique position within Melbourne’s Christmas landscape.

Situated directly opposite the iconic Myer Christmas Windows and connecting Bourke Street Mall with Little Collins Street, the arcade experiences substantial pedestrian traffic throughout the festive season.

Any decorative program needed to respond to several important considerations:

  • Respect the heritage character of the building.
  • Maintain clear circulation paths through the arcade.
  • Create visual impact during both day and evening trading.
  • Integrate seamlessly with the surrounding Christmas activity occurring throughout the Melbourne CBD.
  • Deliver a premium experience aligned with the quality of the retail destination.

From the outset, it was clear that the architecture itself should remain the hero of the experience.

Developing the design

The design strategy focused on celebrating the volume and grandeur of the arcade rather than competing with it.

Rather than introducing large decorative elements at ground level, the concept concentrated on the arcade’s impressive vertical space, drawing visitors’ attention upward and encouraging them to experience the building from a different perspective.

Suspended decorative installations became the central feature of the program.

Rows of holographic stars were carefully positioned throughout the length of the arcade and adjoining Elizabeth Street corridor, creating a continuous festive journey through the space. Integrated icicle lighting added another layer of visual interest, transforming the experience from day to night.

The holographic stars were selected not only for their festive qualities but also for their ability to interact with light. Throughout the day they reflect natural sunlight entering through the glass roof, while in the evening they respond to the decorative lighting, creating movement, colour and visual depth throughout the arcade.

The result is a display that continually changes as environmental conditions shift throughout the day.

To complement the suspended decorations, two decorative branch trees were positioned internally and elevated on oversized plinths. A refined black and gold colour palette was selected to reflect the sophistication of the surrounding architecture while creating consistency across the broader decorative scheme.

Creating an arrival experience

The main Bourke Street Mall entrance presented an equally important opportunity.

As one of Melbourne’s busiest pedestrian corridors during Christmas, the entrance required a feature capable of announcing the arcade’s festive presence while maintaining a strong connection to the architecture.

The design team developed a custom entrance installation built around the existing arched structure.

Rather than concealing the structural elements, the design embraced them as part of the composition. Custom-fabricated metal frames, holographic stars and integrated lighting extended the visual language established internally, creating continuity between the exterior and interior experience.

Behind the arch, illuminated net lighting provided an additional layer of depth, creating a subtle glowing backdrop that enhanced the entrance after dark and encouraged visitors to move through the space.

The completed installation established a strong visual identity from Bourke Street Mall while remaining sympathetic to the heritage nature of the building.

Fabrication and production

A significant amount of work occurred behind the scenes before any element arrived onsite.

The project required the fabrication of custom structural components, decorative assembly, electrical integration and detailed planning to ensure all elements could be installed safely within a live retail environment.

Each component was manufactured, tested and prepared prior to installation, allowing the onsite works to be completed efficiently and with minimal disruption to retailers and visitors.

Particular care was taken to ensure that all custom-built elements integrated seamlessly with the existing architecture and could be safely removed and stored following the season.

Installation within a live retail environment

Delivering Christmas installations within active retail destinations requires a balance between creativity and operational precision.

The installation process was carefully coordinated to ensure works could be completed safely while minimising disruption to daily operations.

This included:

  • Detailed site planning.
  • Working-at-heights management.
  • Electrical compliance.
  • Heritage protection considerations.
  • After-hours installation scheduling.
  • Coordination with centre management and retailers.

The suspended decorative elements required specialist rigging and installation techniques, allowing the display to maximise visual impact while maintaining unobstructed movement throughout the arcade below.

The completed installation was delivered on schedule and ready for the commencement of the Christmas trading period.

Beyond installation

While visitors experience the finished result, the Christmas program extends well beyond installation day.

At the conclusion of the season, Christmas Display Solutions undertook the dismantling of all decorative elements, asset inspections, packing and transportation.

Components were then returned to storage where they were catalogued, assessed and prepared for future use.

This lifecycle approach allows decorative assets to be maintained, refurbished where required and efficiently redeployed in future years, supporting both sustainability objectives and long-term value.

The outcome

The completed Christmas program transformed Royal Arcade into a festive destination while preserving the elegance and architectural character for which the building is known.

By concentrating decorative elements above eye level and working with the existing architecture rather than against it, the installation achieved strong visual impact without compromising circulation space or the visitor experience.

Throughout the season, the display contributed to the festive atmosphere of Melbourne’s CBD, creating moments of discovery for visitors while complementing the broader Christmas activity occurring throughout the city.

The project demonstrates how carefully considered seasonal design can enhance a retail destination, celebrate architectural heritage and create memorable visitor experiences without losing sight of the practical requirements of a busy commercial environment.

For Royal Arcade, Christmas became not simply an addition to the space, but an extension of the character and charm that has attracted visitors for generations.

Beyond Royal Arcade

The Royal Arcade project highlights the importance of designing Christmas experiences that respond to the unique characteristics of a destination rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Every shopping centre presents its own opportunities and challenges, from customer demographics and centre positioning through to floor space constraints, architecture, operational requirements and community expectations.

Whether working within a heritage retail destination such as Royal Arcade, a neighbourhood shopping centre, a sub-regional centre, or a major regional retail asset, the objective remains the same: to create a Christmas experience that feels authentic to the centre, enhances the customer journey and supports the broader objectives of the asset.

By understanding how people interact with a space and tailoring each program accordingly, Christmas activations can become a natural extension of the destination itself, creating memorable experiences for shoppers while respecting the operational realities of a modern retail environment.

The most successful Christmas programs are rarely defined by the decorations alone. They are defined by how well they reflect the identity of a centre, connect with the local community and contribute to the experience that visitors remember long after the season has passed.
