Renewal South Australia

Christmas Display Solutions was requested to design a custom made exterior Christmas tree for Adelaide’s Art of Christmas project. Twelve of South Australia’s top artists were engaged to bring their individual interpretations of the meaning of Christmas and decorate the custom made trees that then formed a creative trail along the Adelaide riverbank.

Project Challenges

The project had significant design and fabrication challenges within a very short lead time. The finished trees needed to be identical with a surface colour and finish that would allow them to be dressed or painted. The design needed to be original, not overly intricate and provide sufficient surface for the artists. The design needed to be safe and without edges or protrusions or areas where hands or fingers could get caught. Exposure in all weather conditions needed to be considered, hence the material choice was equally as important as the design. In addition the Christmas tree needed to be safely mounted on a plinth which would feature the signage.

CDS Solution

We are very proud of the design solution, which involved the folding, in origami style, of a single sheet of thin steel which was then matt finished powder coated. The shape was secured with concealed rivets down one edge. A threaded rod through the centre would both support the tree top star as well as secure the tree to the base, which was made out of recycled composite board. The design provided the desired blank canvas for the artists to execute their Christmas inspiration.

The Result

Inspired by similar creative trails in Europe and the US, the Art of Christmas showcased the work of local artists and encouraged people to spend the day on the riverbank and visit attractions along the trail, including Adelaide Oval, South Australian Museum, Adelaide Zoo and Adelaide Botanic Garden.

The project was an outstanding success, meeting its objective to boost economic activity along the riverbank precinct during the traditionally quieter months.
