Leeton Shire Council
Leeton’s determination to position itself as the Art Deco capital of regional Australia doesn’t just end with its buildings – even the Christmas decorations are getting in on the act.
Christmas Display Solutions team was requested to design an original series of Art Deco inspired awning decorations to replace their existing decorations which had been in place for 20 or more years.
The project had many challenges which included designing within tight budget parameters, careful reinterpretation of Art Deco styling and associated creative challenges, materials and structural complexity, the need to fit new decorations into the existing awning mounts (different sizes and types), as well as ensuring stakeholder acceptance for such a non-conventional solution.
These complexities also needed to be managed remotely with Covid restrictions preventing site visits during the developmental process. The secret to managing these was careful planning, detailed and regular communication, precise documentation and not leaving anything to chance. In all there were 130 client email communications over a period of several months.
Art Deco as a style is quiet graphical and well represented in 2D forms – hence our solution involved the use of a 1M round 6mm coloured acrylic sheet secured to a polished aluminium frame.
A series of 8 Art Deco Christmas motifs were created with the designs produced in multi coloured holographic vinyl to contrast the colour of the acrylic. Solar spot lights mounted on the roof added impact at night.
The final product was well received by the community of Leeton and the 40 new Art Deco styled decorations are now a point of pride with the local community and ensure the town’s branding is on track to deliver its strategic and tourism vision.
