Launceston Airport

A significant upgrade and extension of the Launceston Airport created the need to redesign new commercial Christmas decorations that were more in keeping with the new contemporary fit-out and rebranding.

Project Challenges

The challenge was to design and create a bespoke solution that would strongly reflect the unique branding of the Launceston Airport being ‘in the heart of Tasmania’.

The Christmas decorations would hang at the peak tourist season with highest traffic volumes and would need to reflect the unique Tasmania character of the venue. In addition, the large light filled new extension with its soaring slated timber ceilings and expansive tarmac views would require cost-effective large Christmas decorations.

The new fit-out of the extension with its natural tones, use of timber, copper and metallic finishes alongside mocha and orange highlights would limit the appeal of traditional Christmas colours but ultimately provide the inspiration for the new design.

CDS Solution

Inspiration was taken from the branding statement ‘in the heart of Tasmania’, where we designed large stylized apples covered in silver and gold holographic vinyl. This design reflected both the shape of Tasmania and one of its major export crops.

In the centre of apple hangings we created a circular negative space into which we could hang large copper and gold Christmas baubles to give it that Christmas feel. The positioning of the large bauble also became the ‘drop-pin’ in the map of Tasmania to reflect the airport’s location and branding.

The decorations were complemented with an integrated suite of other commercial Christmas decor, such as Christmas trees and garlands, spread throughout the terminal.

The Result

The Christmas decorations became a visual statement of the brand. It reinforced the airport’s messaging with the tens of thousands of visitors over the festive season while enhancing the wider branding of Tasmania as a place of innovation and creativity.
